NIGERIA: Oyo NUT Declares Indefinite Strike Over Abduction Of Teachers And Students
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike across all primary and secondary schools in Oyo State following the continued captivity of teachers and students abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, the union directed teachers to withdraw their services completely with effect from Monday, June 1, 2026, until all the abducted victims are safely and unconditionally released.
The NUT also called on all its state chapters nationwide to hold solidarity rallies on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at their respective Government Houses to protest the vulnerability of schools and demand urgent action from authorities.
The union’s National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, and Secretary General, Dr. Clinton J. Ikpitibo, who signed the statement, expressed deep distress over the worsening condition of the hostages who were abducted on May 15, 2026. They noted that despite repeated appeals, there has been no significant progress in securing their release.
The strike follows reports of the death of some victims in captivity and emotional video appeals made by the abducted school principal and other teachers pleading for government intervention.
The NUT described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that schools, teachers, and students must never become soft targets for criminals. The union urged the Federal and Oyo State Governments, as well as security agencies, to intensify intelligence and rescue operations to bring the remaining victims home safely.
