NIGERIA: JAMB to Set Admission Benchmarks as Policy Meeting Holds May 11
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed May 11, 2026, for its annual policy meeting on admissions, where critical decisions guiding tertiary institution admissions will be finalised.
The meeting is scheduled to hold at the Body of Benchers Auditorium in Jabi, Abuja, and is expected to shape the 2026/2027 admission exercise across the country.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin.
According to the Board, the Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, will unveil key policy directions that will guide admissions into tertiary institutions.
The annual policy meeting serves as a strategic forum where stakeholders determine minimum acceptable scores for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), alongside broader admission guidelines.
“The Board’s annual policy meeting on admissions is a crucial gathering where stakeholders decide minimum tolerable UTME marks, admission guidelines, and policies for tertiary institutions,” the statement noted.
JAMB added that the meeting would formally set the tone for the new admission cycle while reinforcing the need for strict compliance with established regulations.
Participants expected at the meeting include Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts, Registrars, and admission officers from tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Regulatory bodies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) are also billed to attend.
Other stakeholders, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), are expected to deliver goodwill messages.
The event will also feature the sixth edition of the National Tertiary Admissions Performance-Merit Awards (NATAP-M), which recognises institutions for compliance with admission guidelines and contributions to the development of tertiary
education in Nigeria.
