The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the prestigious Oscar Awards, has announced that films created or written using Artificial Intelligence (AI) will not be eligible for the awards.
In a statement released by the Academy, only films written by humans and featuring human actors will be allowed to compete for the honors.
An Academy spokesperson said the decision is aimed at preserving the integrity of filmmaking and protecting human creativity. “The Oscars are meant to celebrate human storytelling and artistic expression, and we believe this must remain at the core of the awards,” the spokesperson said.
The development comes at a time when there has been a significant rise in films produced using AI technologies. Some filmmakers have increasingly turned to AI to generate characters and even write scripts, raising concerns within the industry about authenticity and creative ownership.
However, some filmmakers have expressed mixed reactions to the move, arguing that AI is becoming an important tool in modern filmmaking. One industry expert noted, “AI should be seen as a tool to support creativity, not replace it entirely.”
The Academy has indicated that it will continue to review its policies as technology evolves, but emphasized that, for now, human involvement will remain a key requirement for Oscar
eligibility.
