NIGERIA: Kwankwaso Hints On Leaving ADC, Says Consultations Ongoing
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has dismissed speculations about his immediate political plans, stating that no final decision has been made regarding his future or that of his political associates amid the crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement issued on Saturday titled “Clarification on My Political Position,” the former Kano State Governor noted that recent media reports suggesting a possible realignment were misleading.
Kwankwaso acknowledged the current challenges facing the ADC, particularly the Supreme Court judgment which, while affirming the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee, remitted the matter back to the Federal High Court.
He also referenced the court’s ruling that delegitimised the party’s recent convention and the Attorney General of the Federation’s application to deregister the ADC.
He drew parallels between the current situation in the ADC and the legal issues that forced him and his group out of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
“As other major stakeholders, we have commenced wide-ranging consultations — including with leaders from the NDC, PRP and others — to explore the best options for protecting our democratic interests,” he said.
On the issue of the 2027 presidential race, Kwankwaso made it clear that he has neither declared any intention to run for president nor endorsed any aspirant, adding that the ADC is yet to zone its presidential ticket or take any decision on a candidate.
He recalled his consistent record as a party loyalist, citing how he came second in the 2014 APC presidential primary and fully supported Muhammadu Buhari, and how he supported Atiku Abubakar in 2019 after contesting the PDP ticket.
Kwankwaso explained that his absence from two recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to unavoidable personal commitments, for which he communicated his apologies to the party leadership.
He promised to formally announce any definitive position on his political direction at the appropriate time throu
gh official channels.
