The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Malawi has made progress in implementing key economic reforms under the National Economic Recovery Plan (NERP).
The IMF Mission Chief to Malawi, Justin Tyson, made the remarks following the conclusion of meetings held in Lilongwe from September 22 to October 6, 2026.
The discussions included Malawi’s economic reform programme under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement.
“Malawi has made decisive actions on major reforms to restore macroeconomic stability under the National Economic Recovery Plan (NERP),” Tyson said.
According to Tyson, reforms in fuel and sugar pricing have contributed to improved market functioning, while discussions aimed at reducing the country’s public debt burden have also advanced.
During the mission, the IMF team held meetings with the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, the Secretary to the Treasury, the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi and other senior government officials.
The latest discussions are part of ongoing engagements between the IMF and the Malawi Government on strengthening economic stability, addressing public debt and supporting the implementation of key structural reforms.
