Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria as it joined the High-Level Panel of the Accra Reset Initiative.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, is part of the 18-member panel driving the Africa-led effort to reshape global health governance and prioritise equitable health systems.
The initiative, led by Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, seeks to reposition countries in the Global South as key decision-makers in policies affecting their populations.
Nigeria’s participation reflects ongoing health sector reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focused on improving health outcomes, strengthening governance, and enhancing health security.
“The Accra Reset signals a necessary evolution in global health governance, one that recognises the leadership, agency, and lived realities of countries across Africa and the Global South.”
The panel will engage with global institutions including the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to advance reforms that prioritise equity, resilience, and sustainability.
The Federal Government said the move aligns with its broader strategy to strengthen domestic healthcare systems, expand sustainable financing, and deepen regional collaboration in tackling m
ajor diseases.
