Government says it will engage engineers and other technical experts to develop a long-term solution to challenges affecting the Nkhata Bay Jetty, which has been submerged due to rising water levels on Lake Malawi.
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, made the remarks after inspecting the jetty in Nkhata Bay following reports that the facility is in a deteriorated state and completely submerged in water.
Mhango said the situation requires thorough technical consultations to identify a durable and permanent solution.
“We need to engage engineers and other experts so that we come up with a long-lasting solution that will address the jetty problem once and for all,” said Mhango.
The submerging of the jetty has forced authorities to alter docking arrangements for vessels operating on the lake.
Currently, large ships such as the MV Ilala are docking away from the shoreline, compelling passengers to use small private boats to embark and disembark, a development that is raising safety and convenience concerns.
The Minister has since assured the public that the government remains committed to restoring safe and efficient lake transport services
in Nkhata Bay.
