The opposition United Transformation Movement (UTM) has faulted the government’s decision to increase fuel prices, describing it as a sign of “profound policy failure.”
The party has also expressed concern that the government has not put in place safety nets to cushion the public from the impact of the price adjustment.
While acknowledging global oil price dynamics, UTM Secretary General Willet Karonga alleged that the local fuel price hike has largely been driven by domestic levies and taxes.
Karonga has since urged authorities to adopt a shock-absorbing approach, including temporary reductions in fuel levies and taxes to ease the burden on citizens.
He warned that the increase in fuel prices will trigger a rise in the cost of living, with vulnerable communities expected to be the ha
rdest hit.
