Kenya Paralysed as Transport Strike Enters Second Day Over Fuel Prices
By Moses Punyuah, Nairobi
Thousands of commuters across Kenya remained stranded for the second consecutive day after public transport operators sustained a nationwide strike protesting rising fuel prices.
The demonstrations, backed by groups including the Matatu Owners Association and the Transport Sector Alliance, disrupted transport services in major towns and cities among them Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisii and Nyeri.
Roads were blocked using bonfires, stones and burning tyres, forcing many Kenyans to walk long distances to work and other destinations as businesses and schools experienced major disruptions.
The protests were triggered by the latest fuel price hike announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, with operators terming the cost of diesel unsustainable for the transport sector.
Interior ministry reports indicate that at least four people have been killed and dozens injured following clashes witnessed in several counties during the protests.
Talks between the government and transport unions reportedly collapsed on Monday evening, with operators vowing to continue the strike until meaningful intervention is made on fuel prices and tran
sport costs.
