KENYA: Ebola Facility Plan Sparks Row as Doctors Tell US Government: ‘Take Resources to Congo
By Moses Punyuah, Nairobi
A fresh dispute has emerged over plans of the US government to establish an Ebola quarantine and treatment facility in Kenya, with doctors warning that the move could divert attention from the real battleground against the deadly disease.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has urged the US government to focus containment efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the outbreak originated, instead of setting up a quarantine centre in Kenya.
Addressing the media, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah argued that resources should be deployed to the epicentre of the outbreak to prevent further spread.
“The best way of containment of any outbreak is through the epicentre; the point of the outbreak, like in Congo,” Atellah said.
The doctors’ union noted that ongoing conflict in eastern DRC has complicated containment efforts, calling on Kenya and regional governments to send more experts and resources to support the response.
The remarks come amid growing political opposition and legal challenges surrounding the proposed Ebola facility, setting the stage for a wider debate on whether Kenya should prepare for a possible outbreak or focus its efforts beyond its borders
