Malawian President Ranked Africa’s Best Performing President In APAC’s Mid-Year Governance Report

The African Presidency Accountability Council (APAC) has ranked Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika as Africa’s best performing head of state in governance, human rights and political stability, according to its 2026 Mid-Year Report.

The report, released in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, places Mutharika ahead of other African leaders, with APAC commending his administration for what it describes as strong leadership, commitment to democratic governance and efforts to improve the welfare of Malawians.

APAC Secretary General Ahmed Sankoh Sherrif described Mutharika as “an African star shining in Malawi,” saying the President has demonstrated exceptional leadership and delivered results that have earned recognition across the continent.

“President Mutharika has outperformed a number of African presidents in service delivery and commitment to the people. He has managed to meet the needs of suffering Malawians, especially in ensuring that food remains available at affordable prices,” Sherrif said in a statement.

According to the council, the assessment considered key governance indicators, including political stability, respect for human rights and overall government performance.

Sherrif further announced that APAC will next month release detailed country scorecards covering all 54 member states of the African Union (AU), providing a comprehensive breakdown of each country’s performance across the governance indicators assessed.
