MALAWI: Mutharika Redirects Independence Day Funds to Economic Development in Push Against Poverty
By Smile Hamilton
President Peter Mutharika has declared that this year’s Independence Day commemorations should serve as a turning point towards economic transformation, announcing that all public funds initially allocated for the celebrations will instead be redirected to productive sectors aimed at reducing poverty and stimulating economic growth.
In his Independence Day message, Mutharika said Malawi has already attained political independence, but the country’s next major challenge is achieving economic independence. He said this year’s commemorations will therefore be observed through prayers only, allowing government resources to be invested in sectors that directly improve the lives of Malawians.
“The next frontier for our country is economic independence. That is why we have decided to redirect funds budgeted for Independence Day celebrations to productive sectors that will help create jobs, reduce poverty and grow our economy,” Mutharika said.
The President said his administration remains committed to creating an environment that promotes investment, business growth and shared prosperity. He noted that although Malawi continues to face global economic pressures, political uncertainties and natural disasters, the country has maintained stable food security while macroeconomic conditions are gradually improving.
According to Mutharika, the improving economic environment is expected to attract more investment, generate employment opportunities and increase foreign exchange earnings, laying a stronger foundation for sustainable national development.
He further called on Malawians to remain united and work together in building a self-reliant economy, expressing confidence that through collective effort, the country can achieve lasting economic independence and ensure that the benefits of growth are shared equitably among all citizens.
As Malawi marks 62 years of independence, Mutharika said the occasion should inspire citizens to look beyond political freedom and embrace the collective responsibility of transforming the country’s economy for future generations.
