The Nigerian Army has alerted the public to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X account, saying it has activated technical and protective measures to secure the platform.
The incident occurred at about 5pm on Saturday, and is being treated as a cybersecurity breach, according to a statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.
The Army said its response was aimed at preventing further unauthorised access, protecting the account and safeguarding the integrity of information disseminated through the platform.
It assured members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that measures were being taken to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control.
The Army, however, warned the public to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content that may be published from the affected X account while the incident is being resolved.
According to the statement, any such content should not be regarded as representing the official position of the Nigerian Army.
The Army urged members of the public and the media to verify information through its other official communication platforms pending the restoration of full control of the affected account.
The alternative platforms listed by the Army include its Facebook pages, Nigerian Army and Nigerian ArmyInfo; Instagram accounts, Nigerian Army and Nigerian ArmyInfo; X account, Nigerian ArmyInfo; and YouTube channels, Nigerian Army and @nigerianarmyinfotv.
The Army said it remained committed to information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication, while appreciating the vigilance, understanding and cooperation of the public.
It added that further updates would be provided as necessary.
