NIGERIA: Peter Obi Cites National Crisis, ADC Litigation As Reasons For Exit
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has formally joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
In a statement released on Monday, Obi explained that the dire condition of the nation and the urgent need to rescue Nigeria informed his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He said the move was not driven by anger or personal ambition but by a deep reflection on the suffering of ordinary Nigerians, including rising poverty, hunger, insecurity, collapsing businesses, and the loss of hope among the youth.
Obi noted that, just as he exited the Labour Party, severe and orchestrated litigations as well as internal crises in the ADC made it difficult for him and other leaders to effectively participate in the electoral process. He expressed gratitude to the ADC leadership, particularly Chairman Senator David Mark, and Atiku Abubakar for the opportunity to work together.
While appealing to the Federal Government to stop encouraging litigations and crises within opposition parties, Obi stressed that a healthy democracy requires strong institutions and credible alternatives.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the struggle for a new Nigeria built on justice, competence, accountability, and compassion, adding that the task ahead is bigger than any individual or political party.
“A new Nigeria is still possible,” Obi declared.
The development marks a significant realignment in the opposition ahead of the 2027 g
eneral elections.
