NIGERIA: Ogun Workers Get Weekly Day Off, ₦10,000 Transport Allowance
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has approved a weekly day off duty and a ₦10,000 transport allowance for public servants to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices and cost of living.
The measures, which will run for three months from April 2026, are aimed at easing transportation challenges faced by workers across the state.
This was contained in a statement issued by the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya.
According to him, each eligible worker will observe one day off per week in addition to receiving a monthly ₦10,000 transport allowance.
“The initiative is designed to provide relief for workers facing commuting challenges, while also promoting improved productivity through a more motivated workforce,” he said.
Onasanya, however, noted that certain categories of workers would be exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the critical nature of their duties.
These include medical personnel, judicial staff, teaching and non-teaching staff, security personnel, accounting officers, and heads of departments.
Despite the exemption, he said affected workers would still benefit from the transport allowance.
“Accounting Officers in Ministries, Departments and Agencies will determine the specific day off in a manner that ensures uninterrupted service delivery,” he added.
He described the intervention as timely and commended the governor for prioritising workers’ welfare amid economic challenges.
Onasanya urged workers to reciprocate the gesture with renewed commitment and impr
oved service delivery.
