By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The Labour Party has fixed April 28, 2026, for its national convention in Umuahia, where new national executives are expected to emerge.
The party disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the interim national chairman.
The statement said the party has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission of its planned congresses and convention in line with statutory requirements.
It read: “This notification is made pursuant to the provisions of Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), the INEC regulations and guidelines for Political Parties, and Section 223(1) and (2) of the Constitution.”
The party had earlier postponed its convention initially scheduled for April 11, citing the need to ensure wider participation of members and conclude its ongoing digital membership registration.
“The party… notified the commission of the postponement of its previously scheduled activities to enable broader participation of members, particularly to allow for the completion of the ongoing digital membership registration process,” the statement added.
A timetable released by the party shows that ward congresses will hold nationwide on April 23, followed by local government congresses on April 24.
State congresses are slated for April 25 across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The statement added that the national convention will take place at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia.
“The national convention will be held on April 28 at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, A
bia State,” it said.
