NIGERIA: FG Defends Jilli Airstrike as Targeted Operation, Orders Full Probe
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The Federal Government has defended the recent airstrike in the Jilli axis of Borno State as a targeted counter-terrorism operation, while ordering a full investigation into the incident.
The government maintained that the strike, carried out on April 11, was based on credible intelligence targeting insurgent activities in a high-risk zone.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the operation was “deliberate and intelligence-led,” aimed at disrupting terrorist networks operating within the area.
“The Jilli axis… has long functioned as an insurgent-controlled enclave where Boko Haram and ISWAP operatives collect levies, procure supplies, and coordinate attacks,” the statement said.
The government added that the location had been designated a restricted zone due to persistent insurgent activity, with security advisories warning against civilian presence.
It further disclosed that the strike followed weeks of surveillance and was part of ongoing efforts under Operation HADIN KAI to degrade terrorist capacity in the North-East.
While expressing condolences to affected families, the government acknowledged concerns over possible civilian casualties, stating that “any loss of civilian life is deeply regretted.”
It also announced that a full and independent investigation would review the operation, including intelligence, targeting, and execution, to ensure accountability where necessary.
The government said humanitarian support is being coordinated with relevant agencies, including state authorities and emergency responders, for affected communities.
It also urged the media to exercise responsibility in reporting security matters, warning against unverified claims that could undermine ongoing operations.
Recall that Africa Culture TV reported that dozens of people were feared dead following a suspected airstrike at a weekly market in the Jilli area along the Borno–Yobe border, although authorities have yet to officially c
onfirm casualty figures.
