MALAWI: Government to Sell Abandoned Aircraft at KIA After 17 Years
By Smile Hamilton
The Malawi Government has announced plans to sell an aircraft that has remained idle for 17 years at Kamuzu International Airport, in a move aimed at improving operations at the country’s main gateway.
Authorities say the aircraft, which has been sitting unused on the airport premises for nearly two decades, has become a major obstruction affecting the efficient use of space and overall airport management.
According to government officials, the decision to dispose of the aircraft follows years of concern over its continued presence, with stakeholders describing it as both an eyesore and a logistical challenge.
“The aircraft has overstayed and is now interfering with smooth airport operations. Selling it is the most practical solution to reclaim valuable space,” said a source familiar with the development.
Officials further indicated that the sale process will follow established public asset disposal procedures to ensure transparency and accountability.
Aviation experts have also weighed in on the development, noting that abandoned aircraft can pose safety risks and increase maintenance burdens if left unattended for long periods.
The move is expected to free up critical space at Kamuzu International Airport and enhance operational efficiency, as Malawi continues efforts to modernize its aviation infrastructure and improve service delivery
in the sector.
