The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has urged people still living in camps in Salima District to return to their homes if floodwaters have receded, in order to prevent disease outbreaks caused by poor sanitation conditions in the camps.
Deputy Director of Disaster Preparedness and Response at DoDMA, Nelly Kalengamaliro, said this while distributing food and other relief items to 250 people staying in camps under Traditional Authorities Pemba and Khombedza in the district.
The relief support, valued at K27 million, was donated by Sunbird Hotels through the Malawi Red Cross Society to help affected families restart their lives once they return home.
Malawi Red Cross Society’s Head of Communications and Resource Mobilisation, Roster Kufandiko, said the assistance will help reduce the number of people still staying in camps.
One of the beneficiaries, Everess Saka, said he is ready to return home and begin repairing his house, which was partially damaged.
According to a statement released by DoDMA, the country initially had 84 camps, but currently 74 camps are sti
ll occupied.
