NIGERIA: Atiku, Obi, Others Rally in Abuja For ADC Coalition Launch
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Nigerian political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, on Wednesday attended the official launch of a new opposition coalition at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.
Other key attendees included former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai; former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha; Senator Dino Melaye; and Dele Momodu, a publisher and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Also present were former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung; Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party; and former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd.).
The coalition, comprising members of the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, Social Democratic Party, and other political blocs, is operating under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group has adopted the ADC as its political vehicle to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming polls.
A former Senate President, David Mark, who recently resigned from the PDP, was named the interim national chairman of the ADC. A former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, was also announced as the interim national secretary.
The coalition launching is currently holding as of the time of filing this report. More details later.
