MALAWI: Chakwera Arrives Nigeria For High-Level AFREXIM Bank Annual Meetings

Malawian President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, has arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, to attend the 32nd Annual Meetings of the African Export-Import Bank (AFREXIM Bank), scheduled to take place from 25th to 27th June 2025.

The annual gathering is one of Africa’s most significant events, bringing together Heads of State and Government from Africa and the Caribbean, development partners, and leading global financial experts.
The forum focuses on high-level policy discussions concerning Africa’s social and economic transformation.

Upon arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, President Chakwera and the First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, were welcomed by Nigerian Chief of Protocol Ibrahim Agumbi, Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo, and other government officials.
During the meetings, President Chakwera is expected to hold bilateral talks with several world leaders to strengthen partnerships in key sectors of Malawi’s development agenda.
These include agriculture, tourism, mining, and supporting industries essential for national growth.
Among the high-profile engagements, President Chakwera will meet with His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as Professor Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of AFREXIM Bank.
He is also set to hold talks with other African leaders to promote investment opportunities in Malawi.
Themed “Building the Future on Decades of Resilience,” this year’s meetings reflect on Africa’s achievements over the past 30 years and the bold steps needed to navigate today’s complex global economic environment.
AFREXIM Bank is a Pan-African multilateral financial institution that finances and promotes intra- and extra-African trade. Over the past three decades, the bank has deployed innovative financial tools to support Africa’s industrialisation and boost regional trade integration.
Malawi continues to benefit from AFREXIM Bank’s initiatives, including a notable US$100 million Trade Finance Facilitation Facility signed with the National Bank of Malawi (NBM), aimed at boosting trade in the agriculture, energy, and manufacturing sectors.
