Paris Saint-Germain were handed a surprise 1-0 defeat by Brazil’s Botafogo on Thursday in a tense Club World Cup group stage clash at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
A well-taken goal in the 36th minute by Igor Jesus was enough to separate the South American champions from the reigning kings of Europe in front of a crowd of 53,699.
Despite dominating possession and entering the match on the back of a 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid, PSG could not break down a stubborn Botafogo defence. The result dents the French side’s hopes of early qualification to the last 16.
“We knew how strong Botafogo is. It was a tough game, we defended well and scored. This win means a lot. One team was the Champions League winner, the other was South America’s best – and we stood tall,” said match-winner Jesus after the final whistle.
The 22-year-old forward, who recently rejected a transfer move to Nottingham Forest to stay with Botafogo for the Club World Cup, said he had no regrets. “I think I made the right choice to stay,” he said.
PSG coach Luis Enrique admitted his side expected a battle. “This is a very intense tournament,” he said. “Botafogo defended well. But we still have time to fix things. If there’s any team that can turn this around, it’s us.”
PSG started brightly, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia forcing an early save just two minutes in. But the match soon turned into a scrappy contest, with frequent fouls disrupting the French side’s rhythm.
Botafogo’s midfield trio of Marlon Freitas, Gregore and Allan worked hard to smother PSG’s Vitinha, closing down space and cutting off supply lines.
The breakthrough came when Jefferson Savarino slipped a clever pass between defenders, allowing Jesus to outfox Willian Pacho and finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma with a deflected shot.
PSG pressed in the second half and kept Botafogo pinned in their own half for long periods. But the Brazilian side held on to claim a famous win.
The result puts Botafogo in prime position to advance from Group B, with a final group game against Atletico Madrid set for Monday. PSG, meanwhile, must regroup quickly to keep their title hopes alive.
