KENYA: Governor Sakaja Distances City Hall From Protest Violence, Condemns Hawker Shooting
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has distanced himself and his administration from the violence and destruction that marred recent protests in the city.
Speaking during a press briefing held at City Hall on Tuesday afternoon, Sakaja strongly condemned the chaos, especially the reported shooting of a hawker in the Central Business District.
He said, “The shooting of a hawker during the protests is deeply troubling and unacceptable. We cannot allow such acts of violence to go unaddressed.”
Sakaja further stated that individuals responsible for causing destruction were not acting on behalf of City Hall, saying, “These were not Nairobi youths. Hired goons were brought in from outside to disrupt peace and destroy property. We want to make it clear that neither I nor my office sanctioned this.”
He called on relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure justice is served, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting Nairobi residents and upholding the rule of law.
