The Kenyan government has announced plans to issue financial grants of Sh50,000 to 70 small businesses in each of the country’s 1,450 wards.
The initiative, unveiled by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during an economic empowerment event in Naivasha, targets micro-entrepreneurs such as vegetable vendors, barbers, salon operators, tailors, and other informal traders who need capital support.
Speaking at the forum, Kindiki emphasized the government’s commitment to uplifting grassroots businesses through the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (Beta).
He said the goal is to help small ventures grow and generate employment opportunities.
The Deputy President reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to supporting ordinary Kenyans who drive the economy from the bottom up.
He dismissed critics of the programme and urged those opposed to come forward and explain why they are against empowering local traders.
Kindiki also highlighted plans to expand the Climate WorX initiative, currently active in Nairobi, to other parts of the country.
This project involves environmental clean-up efforts like restoring rivers and unblocking drainage systems, with youth participation at its core.
During the Naivasha event, over Sh11 million was raised in support of economic empowerment, with contributions from President William Ruto, Governor Susan Kihika, Kindiki himself, and other leaders.
Governor Kihika mentioned that the county is constructing three modern marketplaces in Naivasha, aiming to provide safer and more dignified spaces for traders.
These markets will be equipped with essential amenities such as restrooms, nursing areas, and internet access.
Additionally, Kindiki stated that the government is in the process of acquiring land to resettle families affected by the recent Mai Mahiu tragedy, with the relocation expected to take place soon.
