The Borno State Government has donated N10 million and distributed food items to the parents of the missing girls, as the nation marked the 11th anniversary of the abduction of schoolgirls from Chibok.
According to a statement released on the state’s Ministry of Information and Internal Security Facebook page on Tuesday, the commemorative event took place on Monday in Chibok Local Government Area.
The gathering brought together grieving parents, community leaders, and government officials in remembrance of the 276 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, in 2014.
The statement confirmed that 189 of the abducted girls have been rescued so far.
The statement revealed: “Efforts remain ongoing to locate and safely return the remaining girls. Of the rescued, 18 are currently under the care of the Borno State Government, where they are receiving psychosocial support, vocational training, and academic tutorials in preparation for their WAEC examinations.”
Leading the state’s delegation was the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo, who delivered a message on behalf of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum. In her remarks, Gambo expressed the government’s unwavering support for the families.
she stated: “As a show of solidarity and compassion, the government provided ₦10 million in cash and food items to the 276 parents of the abducted girls.”
Gambo assured the community that the government remains committed to rehabilitating and reintegrating the rescued girls into society.
She added: “They are not just being rehabilitated; they are being given a new chance at life.”
Also speaking at the event, Chibok Local Government Chairman Mustapha Modu and the area’s representative in the Borno State House of Assembly, Pogu Lawan, commended the government’s consistent support. They urged for continued efforts until all the missing girls are safely returned and their families find closure.
