MALAWI: Government Urged to Invest In Lake Malawi Transportation Services

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Malawian government has been called upon to invest in public transportation services on Lake Malawi to prevent avoidable deaths.
This appeal comes after a tragic incident where 11 people lost their lives when a boat capsized on Saturday morning. The vessel was carrying 30 people who were reportedly meant to board MV Chilembwe.
Social commentator Lucky Mbewe emphasizes the need for reliable transportation services, particularly for residents of Chizumulu and Likoma islands.
According to Mbewe, investing in lake transportation would not only save lives but also address the issue of unregistered vessels operating on Malawi’s water bodies.
President Lazarus Chakwera has assured that he is closely monitoring investigations into the unlawful operation of the unregistered vessel involved in the incident. The government is expected to take measures to ensure maritime safety and prevent such tragedies in the future.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of vessels operating on Lake Malawi.
Many have questioned the condition and age of the ships, including MV Chilembwe, which has been in service for several decades.
Some have expressed concerns that the vessel’s age may pose safety risks, highlighting the need for the government to prioritize maritime safety and invest in modern, reliable vessels.
Mbewe’s concerns highlight the importance of prioritizing safety and investing in infrastructure.
By taking proactive measures, the government can reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the well-being of citizens and visitors alike.
