KENYA: Raila Odinga Defends ODM’s Cooperation With Ruto’s Government

By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, has defended his party’s decision to collaborate with President William Ruto’s government, dismissing claims that it amounts to political betrayal.
Speaking at a public event in Mombasa, Odinga reassured his supporters that ODM remains committed to its core values despite engaging with the ruling administration.
He emphasized that the cooperation is aimed at fostering national unity and advancing key policy objectives rather than compromising the party’s independence.
His remarks come amid internal divisions within ODM, with some members expressing concerns over the growing alignment with Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Critics argue that the move weakens the opposition’s role in holding the government accountable, while supporters view it as a strategic approach to ensuring ODM’s influence in national affairs.
Odinga, however, dismissed speculation that the party is merging with Kenya Kwanza, insisting that the engagement is issue-based and in the best interest of the country.
He urged party members to remain patient and focus on the broader vision of development and governance.
The development marks a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape, as alliances continue to evolve ahead of the next general elections.
