King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has called on President William Ruto’s administration to safeguard the fundamental rights of all Kenyans, in line with the country’s Constitution.
Speaking during his official visit to Kenya, the Dutch monarch emphasized that human rights, good governance, and accountability were central to his trip.
He also noted that he would engage with young Kenyans at the Netherlands embassy to understand their perspectives on current issues.
“Kenyans, like the Dutch, want their freedoms respected and their voices heard. I am pleased that our strong relationship enables us to focus on key matters such as governance, accountability, and human rights,” he stated.
He added that he looked forward to discussions with Kenyan youth regarding recent developments in the country.
Following a meeting at State House, Nairobi, the two leaders signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and a letter of intent aimed at deepening the partnership between Kenya and the Netherlands.
King Willem-Alexander expressed confidence that the agreements would enhance cooperation between the two nations, praising Kenya’s economic progress, democratic institutions, and global influence.
“Our collaboration highlights our shared interests and the strong ties between our nations,” he remarked.
The signed MoUs will focus on agriculture, trade, and tourism, while both leaders also explored potential cooperation in areas such as security and climate change.
In recent months, concerns over human rights violations in Kenya have escalated, with security agencies facing accusations of excessive force and enforced disappearances linked to anti-government protests.
According to the Kenya Human Rights Commission, out of the 82 people reported missing since June last year, 29 remain unaccounted for, raising alarm over public safety.
