NIGERIA: IGP Reaffirms Ban On Public Parade Of Suspects, Pledges Protection Of Fundamental Rights

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the ban on the public parade of criminal suspects, emphasizing the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to upholding fundamental human rights and aligning with global best practices in policing.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP reaffirmed that police commands and zones across the country must adhere strictly to the directive prohibiting the public display of suspects before formal charges are filed in court.
This policy, according to the IGP, is a crucial step in modernizing police operations and ensuring that law enforcement activities comply with international human rights standards.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals, including those suspected of crimes. The public parade of suspects undermines the principles of justice and due process, which are fundamental to a fair legal system,” the statement read.
The IGP also called on the media to support this initiative by exercising responsible reporting and adhering to ethical journalism standards.
He emphasized that public trust in the justice system depends on ensuring that the rights of all individuals, including suspects, are protected throughout the judicial process.
The directive aligns with broader police reforms aimed at fostering professionalism and accountability within the force while reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
