Breaking: CSOs Storm National Assembly, Call For Akpabio’s Resignation

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on Tuesday stormed the entrance of the National Assembly in Abuja, demanding the immediate resignation of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The protest follows the heated confrontation between Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.
The dispute, which began during a Senate plenary session, stemmed from Senator Natasha’s accusations that Akpabio was deliberately suppressing her voice and obstructing her efforts to speak on pressing national issues, particularly those affecting her constituency.
Natasha had consistently raised concerns about gender bias, marginalization of opposition lawmakers, and lack of fairness in the Senate under Akpabio’s leadership.
The situation escalated into a public spat, drawing widespread attention from rights groups and civil society actors.
On Wednesday morning, dozens of CSO members gathered at the National Assembly gate, carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding Akpabio’s resignation.
The protesters accused the Senate President of abuse of power, lack of transparency, and undemocratic conduct, stressing that his leadership style undermines the principles of accountability and inclusive governance.
The demonstrators vowed to continue their protests until Akpabio steps down, insisting that his resignation is necessary to protect Nigeria’s democracy and ensure the Senate operates as an independent and unbiased institution.
