Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, the revered leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and a towering figure in Nigerian politics, has passed away at the age of 97.
His death was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by a representative of the family, Prof. C. C. Clark.
“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday, 17th February 2025. The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family,” the statement reads.
Clark’s passing follows the recent death of another political heavyweight, Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who died at the age of 96 just days ago. The duo played crucial roles in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in advocating for regional inclusivity and good governance.
A lawyer, nationalist, and statesman, Clark dedicated his life to the fight for the rights of the Niger Delta people. His influence spanned decades, from serving as Commissioner for Education in the Mid-Western Region (1968–1971) to his tenure as Commissioner for Finance and Establishment in Bendel State (1972–1975).
At the national level, he was appointed Federal Commissioner for Information in 1975 and later served as a Senator from 1979 to 1983.
Throughout his career, Clark remained a strong advocate for the economic and political empowerment of the Niger Delta region.
His leadership of PANDEF saw him championing resource control, environmental justice, and regional development. He was also instrumental in peace-building efforts among warring factions in the region.
Beyond politics, Clark was a key mediator in resolving disputes between political figures. Most recently, he spearheaded a reconciliation effort between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his former political ally, Nyesom Wike.
The peace committee, chaired by former Akwa Ibom Governor Obong Victor Attah, was formed during PANDEF’s General Assembly in October 2024.
Clark also played a vital role in national dialogues, including his participation in the 2022 Greater Nigeria Conference (GNC) alongside Pa Ayo Adebanjo.
The event, organized by Nzuko Umunna, was aimed at advocating for a Nigerian president of Southeast origin.
