NIGERIA;NNPP Chairman Affirms Expulsion Of Kwankwaso Faction, Defends Legitimacy Of Lagos Convention
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, has reiterated that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his faction remain expelled from the party, dismissing their claims of illegitimacy against the recently concluded national convention in Lagos.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, Major defended the legality of the convention held on February 4, 2025, at the Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos, emphasizing that it was conducted in line with a recent court ruling.
He cited a judgment by the Abia High Court, dated November 1, 2024, which mandated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, as the legitimate leadership.
According to Major, the convention was a culmination of a series of congresses held nationwide, from ward to zonal levels, in compliance with the court directive.
He stressed that the interim order from an FCT High Court, which had temporarily halted the convention on January 22, 2025, had expired, paving the way for its successful conclusion.
“The high points of the convention included the ratification of all congresses held from ward to zonal levels, the expulsion of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima, and the entire Kwankwassiya group following the expiration of the MOU that brought them into the party, and the election of a new National Working Committee led by me as National Chairman,” Major stated.
Other key decisions made at the convention, he noted, included a review of the party’s finances and the rejection of a proposed new logo in favor of the original emblem featuring a basket of fruits on the Nigerian map.
Major further disclosed that all necessary documents have been submitted to INEC, and he expects the electoral body to update its records accordingly.
He also called on the remaining members of the Kwankwassiya faction to accept their expulsion and “find cover elsewhere, as their leaders are already doing.”
The Kwankwaso faction had earlier dismissed the Lagos convention, insisting that Dr. Ajuji Ahmed remains the legitimate National Chairman of the NNPP. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, described Major’s faction as a “renegade group.”
