The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has affirmed that the continued stay in office of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is in full compliance with the law.
In a statement released on Monday, Fagbemi clarified that Egbetokun, whose appointment took effect on October 31, 2023, was originally expected to retire upon reaching the age of 60 on September 4, 2024.
However, an amendment to the Police Act in 2024 now allows an Inspector General of Police to serve a full four-year tenure, regardless of age. This amendment, he stated, has extended Egbetokun’s term until October 31, 2027, ensuring he completes his statutory tenure as provided under Section 7(6) of the Act.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Egbetokun’s continuous stay in office is in line with the provisions of the amended Police Act, which allows the occupant of the office to enjoy a term of four years from the date of appointment as IGP,” Fagbemi stated.
The Attorney General emphasized that the advisory was issued to provide clarity and guidance to the general public, putting to rest any legal concerns about the IGP’s tenure
