MALAWI: Empowering Sustainable Agriculture: Mathews Kumwenda’s Innovative Approach to Organic Manure

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
As Malawi grapples with soaring fertilizer prices, Mathews Kumwenda, founder of Green 4 Africa, is pioneering an innovative solution: organic manure.
Recently, Mathews attended the Zantchito training at Bunda College in Lilongwe, where he acquired cutting-edge knowledge and skills to further develop his organic manure initiative.
Mathews’ vision is to empower farmers across all districts in Malawi to adopt sustainable agriculture practices, reducing their reliance on expensive synthetic fertilizers.
His innovative approach involves collecting waste, transforming it into valuable organic fertiliser, and packaging it for distribution.
This closed-loop system not only reduces waste but also promotes eco-friendly practices and supports sustainable agriculture.
Green 4 Africa has already begun delivering its organic manure to farms nationwide, supporting local farmers and contributing to a more sustainable food system in Malawi.
The organisation is proud to be making a positive impact on the environment, cities like Mzuzu, and communities through sustainable waste management and the promotion of eco-friendly practices.
“We need to change the old system of agriculture that relies heavily on synthetic fertilizers, which harm our soil, water, and environment,” Mathews emphasised. “By adopting organic and sustainable practices, we can not only improve crop yields but also ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for our communities.”
With fertiliser prices skyrocketing, Mathews’ organic manure solution couldn’t have come at a better time.
His innovative approach is poised to make a significant impact on Malawi’s agriculture sector, promoting sustainable practices, improving crop yields, and enhancing food security. and packaging it for distribution.
