Kenya has deployed an additional 217 police officers to Haiti, bolstering its commitment to the United Nations-backed mission aimed at curbing gang violence in the Caribbean nation.
This latest deployment brings the total number of Kenyan officers in Haiti to over 600, marking a significant step in the country’s pledge to help restore peace and stability.
Kenya’s Interior Minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, highlighted the progress made so far in reducing violence.
“Our officers are demonstrating professionalism and resilience in addressing the gang-related challenges in Haiti. Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to international peacekeeping,” said Murkomen during a press briefing in Nairobi.
The deployment is part of an international initiative to address the escalating gang violence in Haiti, which has left communities in turmoil.
The UN has recognized Kenya’s contributions as pivotal in providing structure and security in affected areas.
Kenyan officers have already established a notable presence in Port-au-Prince, working alongside local law enforcement and international agencies.
Their efforts have included community policing, restoring order in high-risk zones, and assisting in humanitarian missions.
Despite logistical challenges and the complexities of operating in an unfamiliar environment, the officers have received praise for their adaptability and dedication.
Kenya’s involvement in Haiti is part of its broader commitment to global peacekeeping efforts.
The country has a long history of participating in international missions, including deployments in Somalia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As the mission in Haiti continues, Kenya remains optimistic about achieving lasting peace and supporting Haiti’s journey toward recovery and development.
