Nigerian Helicopter Crash: NSIB Revises Body Count To Three, Deploys ROV For Search Operations
By onoja Baba,Nigeria.
In a recent update following last Thursday’s helicopter crash off the coast of Port Harcourt, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revised its earlier reports, now confirming that only three bodies—not five—have been recovered.
The crash involved a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registered as 5N-BQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation.
Initially, NSIB Director General Capt. Alex Badeh had announced on Channels TV that five bodies were retrieved. However, on Sunday, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs.
Bimbo Oladeji, clarified the count, stating that while three bodies were recovered on the day of the incident, recovery of the remaining passengers has faced significant challenges due to strong ocean currents and limited visibility.
Oladeji elaborated, “Contrary to earlier reports, only three bodies were recovered on the day of the crash.
Despite the intensive search efforts that continued through October 25, 2024, divers could not retrieve two additional bodies they located due to unfavourable underwater conditions.”
The NSIB has since announced plans to deploy a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) equipped with advanced sensors and cameras to assist in the recovery mission.
According to Oladeji, “The ROV will enable a detailed inspection, precise retrieval, and support for gathering crucial evidence, aiding our ongoing investigation into the accident.”
Director General Badeh reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment, stating, “The NSIB, alongside our partners, is wholly dedicated to recovering both the individuals involved and critical components from this unfortunate incident.
Despite challenging conditions, our team is working tirelessly to uncover clear answers for affected families, loved ones, and the entire nation.”
Adding to the statement, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) also confirmed the revised body count.
African Culture TV reported that in a release by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Olufemi Soneye, the NNPCL stated, “Only three bodies have been recovered from the helicopter crash. Intensive search and rescue operations are ongoing, and our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy.”
