The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Professor Abdullahi Usman as the new Executive Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
His nomination, made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was ratified on Thursday after a thorough consideration of the report from the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The confirmation process was spearheaded by Senator Abubakar Bello (APC-Niger North), the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
In his report to the Senate, Bello highlighted Usman’s extensive experience in Hajj operations, noting his tenure as Chairman of the Kano State Pilgrims Board, where he oversaw the largest contingent of pilgrims in Nigeria.
President Tinubu had submitted Usman’s nomination to the Senate for approval on August 19, 2024, through a letter delivered by his then-Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
The letter emphasized Usman’s academic credentials and hands-on experience in Hajj administration, which positioned him as a suitable candidate for the role.
During the screening process, Usman’s qualifications were thoroughly assessed by the Senate committee, and Senator Bello endorsed him as an ideal leader for NAHCON.
Following the presentation of the committee’s report, the Senate President, GodsWill Akpabio, called for a voice vote, which overwhelmingly confirmed Usman’s appointment.
Usman is set to lead the commission in overseeing Nigeria’s Hajj operations, ensuring a smooth pilgrimage process for thousands of Nigerian pilgrims annually.
