As the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony approaches, the football world eagerly awaits the announcement of this year’s winner of the sport’s most coveted individual prize. The event, set to take place on Monday, 28th October, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, promises to be one of the most unpredictable in recent history.
This marks the 68th edition of the prestigious award, and for the first time in over a decade, football icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are absent from the shortlist.
Lionel Messi, a record eight-time winner, and Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time recipient, have dominated the Ballon d’Or stage for years. However, their absence this year opens the door for new names to step into the spotlight and claim the prestigious honor.
The race for the 2024 Ballon d’Or is intense, with Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior leading the pack. The Brazilian forward’s stellar performances last season, including guiding his team to victory in the UEFA Champions League, have made him the favorite for the men’s award. His remarkable season has positioned him as a top contender, though he faces stiff competition.
Rodri, who played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s Premier League triumph and Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, is another strong candidate. Named Player of the Tournament during Euro 2024, his commanding presence in midfield has earned him a spot on the shortlist. Alongside him is Jude Bellingham, his Real Madrid teammate, whose consistent displays have drawn widespread praise. Dani Carvajal, also of Real Madrid, remains a wildcard contender after contributing significantly to his club’s success and Spain’s European Championship win.
In the women’s category, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí is heavily favored to retain her title and claim the Ballon d’Or Féminin. Bonmatí, who was integral to both her club’s and Spain’s national team triumphs, is expected to secure back-to-back wins. Her closest challengers include Barcelona teammate Caroline Graham Hansen and Lyon’s Kadidiatou Diani, both of whom have also had outstanding seasons.
The Kopa Trophy, presented to the best player under 21, will be another highlight of the evening. Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s electrifying winger, is tipped to take the prize following his standout performances that helped Spain secure victory in the European Championship. He faces competition from Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, though Yamal remains the clear favorite.
In the goalkeeping category, the Yashin Trophy will go to the world’s best shot-stopper. Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez, who helped Aston Villa secure Champions League qualification and was instrumental in his country’s Copa América triumph, is among the frontrunners. Gianluigi Donnarumma, a former winner, is also in the mix, but notable omissions this year include Alisson Becker and Thibaut Courtois.
Fans eager to watch the action unfold can tune in to the live broadcast of the ceremony at 19:00 GMT on L’Équipe’s YouTube channel, which will stream the event for free. With Messi and Ronaldo out of the picture, a new chapter in Ballon d’Or history is about to be written, and the football world is ready for the next superstar to emerge.
