‘Free Protesters Now!’ Kalonzo Demands as Leaders Clash Over Saba Saba Legacy
By Moses Punyuah
Kenya on Tuesday marked Saba Saba, the annual commemoration of the July 7, 1990 pro-democracy movement, when Kenyans took to the streets to demand the return of multiparty democracy. The day has since become a symbol of the country’s struggle for democratic freedoms and constitutional rights.
As this year’s commemorations unfolded, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka demanded the immediate release of those arrested during the protests, accusing police of using excessive force against peaceful demonstrators.
“Peaceful protest is a constitutional right. The police must stop using excessive force and restricting freedom of movement and assembly,” said Kalonzo.
In a contrasting view, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga urged the country to rethink how Saba Saba is observed, saying the day should be dedicated to reflection rather than street protests.
“Saba Saba should be a day of deep commemoration, not friction and street protests. It is time for Saba Saba to evolve into a national holiday,” said Oburu.
