The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has deployed additional police officers to the Joyce Chitsulo reception centre in Mwanza District following recent unrest by Malawians returning from South Africa over delays in receiving financial assistance.
The department says the increased security presence is aimed at maintaining peace and order at the reception centre as the repatriation exercise continues. The move follows protests that erupted a few days ago after some returnees complained about delays in the disbursement of relief funds.
Speaking to African Culture TV, DoDMA Commissioner and Secretary to the Department, Wilson Moleni, confirmed that more police officers have been deployed to the facility to ensure the safety of both returnees and officials.
> “We have increased the number of police officers at the Joyce Chitsulo reception centre to maintain peace and order as we continue assisting Malawians returning from South Africa,” said Moleni.
Under the current assistance package, returnees from Malawi’s Southern Region are receiving K70,000, those from the Central Region K100,000, while returnees travelling to the Northern Region are receiving K150,000 to help them reach their final destinations.
Authorities have since appealed for calm, assuring returnees that the support programme is continuing and that measures have been put in place to ensure the process is conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.
