By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Retired Permanent Secretaries may soon receive improved remuneration as the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) says it has submitted recommendations on the review of their welfare to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.
This was contained in a press statement, signed by Maryam Umar Yusuf, Head, Information and Public Unit, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
According to the statement, the assurance came when the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, received members of the Council of Retired Permanent Secretaries at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Dr. Shehu said, “We have carefully considered your case within our constitutional mandate and submitted our recommendations. We remain fully supportive of initiatives that will ensure retired Permanent Secretaries live dignified lives after years of meritorious service.”
He disclosed that the Commission had concluded its review exercise and that many of the concerns raised by retired Permanent Secretaries had been captured in the recommendations forwarded to the President.
The RMAFC chairman also acknowledged the contributions of retired Permanent Secretaries to national development, saying, “Nothing can replace the experience of an experienced public servant. You are still relevant in shaping policy and advising government on intricate national issues.”
Speaking on behalf of the Council, National Vice Chairman, Elder Akin Arikawe, said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the Commission and appreciating its efforts to address issues affecting retired Permanent Secretaries. He explained that the Council remains committed to supporting government through policy advice, institutional memory and governance reforms.
