NIGERIA: Ogun Traditionalists Invoke Deities, Give 7-Day Appeal Over Oyo Schoolchildren’s Abduction
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Scores of traditional worshippers from across Egbaland on Friday staged a spiritual procession in Abeokuta, Ogun State, invoking deities and ancestral forces over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
The procession, led by the Yeye Olokun Agbaye and Olori of Ilawo Kingdom, Her Royal Majesty Omolara Fashola-MacGregor, moved through major sacred sites in the city, including Olumo Rock, the Lisabi shrine, and the Sodeke shrine, before terminating at the Itoku shrine.
Participants, dressed in white traditional attire, performed prayers and rituals at each location, describing the exercise as a spiritual intervention aimed at securing the release of the abducted victims.
Speaking during the procession, Fashola-MacGregor said the initiative was a “sacred appeal” to ancestral spirits for intervention in the worsening insecurity situation.
“We are here to appeal to the deities of our forefathers and the spirits of our heroes to intervene in this troubling situation,” she said.
She said the prayers were directed at the safe return of abducted victims across the country.
“Our prayers are focused on the safe return of those who have been abducted. We believe that when the people unite in faith and sincerity, divine intervention is possible,” she said.
The worshippers said insecurity across communities required both spiritual and institutional responses, stressing the relevance of traditional institutions in maintaining peace and social stability.
At the end of the procession, the group declared a symbolic seven-day appeal for divine intervention in the safe release of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers.
