KENYA: Ruto Apologises for Decades of Neglect in Northern Kenya, Unveils Major Development Projects
By Moses Punyuah
Kenya President William Ruto has formally apologised to the people of Northern Kenya for decades of marginalisation and underdevelopment, describing the historical neglect of the region as a national injustice that must be corrected.
Speaking during the 63 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir, the President said successive policies left Northern Kenya behind for more than six decades, denying residents equal access to opportunities and development.
“On behalf of the Government and the Republic of Kenya, I extend my sincere apology to the people of Northern Kenya for the hardships and exclusion you have endured over the years,” Ruto said.
The President said the government is now investing heavily in education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure and livestock development to bridge the development gap and integrate the region into the country’s economic transformation.
Among the projects highlighted are the KSh100 billion Northern Kenya Gateway Corridor, KSh38.5 billion affordable housing programme and a KSh5 billion livestock investment company targeting pastoralist communities.
Ruto maintained that no part of Kenya should be left behind because of geography, history or politics, pledging continued investment in the region.
