The M’mbelwa Kingdom has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Ngoni King, His Majesty Inkosi Ya Makhosi Mpezeni IV of Zambia, describing the loss as a painful moment for Ngoni people across Southern Africa.
Speaking after receiving a delegation from Chipata in Zambia, Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa V said he received the news with a heavy heart as tradition demands that the death of a king or senior royal family member be communicated in person.
The delegation, led by Inkosi Saili and accompanied by government officials from Zambia, travelled to Malawi to formally inform the M’mbelwa Kingdom of the passing of Mpezeni IV in accordance with long-standing Ngoni customs and traditions.
“In keeping with our Ngoni culture, where news of a death must be announced face-to-face, the delegation came to officially inform me of the passing of my elder brother and King, His Majesty Inkosi Ya Makhosi Mpezeni IV,” said M’mbelwa V.
The Paramount Chief thanked Inkosi Saili, the Royal Establishment, the Government of Zambia and the Ngoni Kingdom of Zambia for honouring the shared heritage that binds Ngoni people across borders.
“I thank Inkosi Saili, on behalf of the entire Royal Establishment, the Government of Zambia, and the Ngoni Kingdom of Zambia, for walking the path of our forefathers and preserving the traditions that unite us,” he said.
M’mbelwa V said the M’mbelwa Kingdom stands in full solidarity with the Royal Family of Mpezeni IV, the Ngoni people of Zambia and all those affected by the loss, adding that the late king will be remembered for promoting peace, unity and harmony among his subjects.
“As we mourn this great loss, we also celebrate the life of a distinguished leader who dedicated himself to fostering peace, unity and harmony among his people. May God grant strength and comfort to his family and to all Ngoni subjects across Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania,” he said.
The death of Mpezeni IV marks the end of an era for one of Southern Africa’s most respected traditional leaders, whose influence extended beyond Zambia and helped strengthen cultural ties among Ngoni communities throughout the region.
