Lilongwe City Council has secured K15.5 billion from the Roads Fund Administration to implement a series of road construction and maintenance projects across the capital.
Chief Executive Officer Clement Stambuli said the funding will support key infrastructure developments aimed at improving mobility within the city. He highlighted that the projects include the construction of the Cherub Bridge and its access road.
Stambuli further explained that other works will involve the rehabilitation of a one-kilometre stretch of road in Area 43, upgrading of a 1.4-kilometre road from Area 49 New Shire–Kaunda Gulliver to Kaunda Old Shire, and the rehabilitation of the 0.8-kilometre Senti–Cheni-Cheni Mchiti road.
He added, “Out of the K15.5 billion, K0.5 billion has been allocated specifically for pothole patching in selected areas of the city,” emphasizing the council’s commitment to improving road conditions for motorists and pedestrians.
Meanwhile, Roads Fund Administration Chief Executive Officer Stewart Malata said the projects will be financed under the Special City Roads Programme, which is funded through fuel levies.
Malata projected that the institution expects to collect approximately K250 billion from fuel levies in the current financial year. “Apart from Lilongwe City Council, we will also finance road construction and maintenance projects for other councils across the country,” he said.
The development is expected to ease traffic congestion, enhance connectivity, and support economic activities in Lilong
we and beyond.
