Veteran Nollywood actor and theatre scholar Kola Oyewo has died at the age of 80.
His death was confirmed by fellow actor Kunle Afod in an Instagram post on Friday. Oyewo had recently celebrated his 80th birthday in March 2026 after battling ill health for several months.
Announcing the actor’s passing, Afod paid tribute to Oyewo’s contributions to Nigeria’s theatre and film industry.
“Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow,” Afod wrote.
He added, “His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on. It’s a wrap.”
Oyewo was widely respected as both an actor and academic, with a career that spanned decades on stage and screen. Through his performances and mentorship, he played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s theatre tradition and the growth of Nollywood.
The veteran actor marked his 80th birthday earlier this year, drawing tributes from colleagues, admirers and public figures who celebrated his enduring impact on the creative industry.
His death has sparked an outpouring of grief within the entertainment community, with many remembering him as a gifted performer, scholar and cultural icon whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
