By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Major General Abubakar Rabe (rtd), a former Director of Defence Information, has died while in the captivity of bandits in Katsina State.
The retired senior military officer was kidnapped two weeks ago alongside his wife in the Matazu area of the state while travelling to attend a wedding.
The Katsina State Government confirmed his death in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Muazu.
According to the government, the General died a natural death from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement read.
“Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” it added.
The statement described the incident as a “monumental loss” not only to his family and Katsina State but to the entire country. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and the nation at large, describing the development as a “dark moment” that underscores the urgent need for intensified efforts against criminal elements.
The governor assured that the state remains committed to collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice and eliminate banditry in the region.
Major General Rabe’s abduction and subsequent death have once again highlighted the worsening security situation in parts of Katsina State and the vulnerability of citizens, including high-profile individuals, to bandit attacks. His wife’s current status is yet to be clarified by authorities.
