KENYA: State Agencies Warn Politicians Ahead of 2027 Polls

A powerful multi-agency team has been formed to crack down on hate speech, incitement and political violence ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders found culpable facing possible disqualification from the ballot.

The team brings together the NCIC, IEBC, DCI and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, which say they will jointly investigate, arrest and prosecute politicians who violate electoral laws.

“This is a warning against the divisive and inciting conduct of some leaders. If left unchecked, this trend will set the nation on a dangerous trajectory,” said NCIC Chairperson Bishop Kepha Nyamweya Omae.

The Political Parties Liaison Committee revealed that more than 15 politicians could be barred from contesting the 2027 elections for failing to meet the required standards.

“Some of the people you see campaigning should not worry you because we will ensure they do not appear on the ballot,” said Evans Misati.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said free and credible elections cannot be held in an environment poisoned by hate, while DCI Director Mohamed Amin warned that politicians spreading inflammatory statements should brace for legal action.

“They are leading this country towards anarchy… We have formed this multi-agency team to deal with the menace of reckless politicians,” said Amin.
