President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria following a landmark two-day state visit to the United Kingdom, describing the trip as “very thrilling and significant” in deepening bilateral ties between the two nations, the first such visit by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.
Accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the President was hosted at Windsor Castle by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, where he inspected a guard of honour, received a 42-gun salute, and joined ceremonial receptions highlighting shared history and mutual respect.
During bilateral talks at 10 Downing Street with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the leaders discussed critical areas including trade, the economy, climate change, terrorism, and global challenges.
A major outcome was the signing of a £746 million financing deal between UK Export Finance and Nigerian authorities to refurbish the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays) and Tin Can Island Port Complex, boosting maritime infrastructure and trade capacity. President Tinubu emphasized the enduring institutional development Nigeria has gained from its relationship with the UK and expressed commitment to a future built on partnership, mutual respect, and common values.
The visit also included engagements with the Nigerian diaspora and British business leaders, as well as the signing of multiple agreements on trade, investment, defence, cultural cooperation, and energy transition.
Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila and other All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts were among key figures involved in supporting the diplomatic engagements.
Upon his return, President Tinubu is set to join Muslim faithful in marking Eid al-Fitr, with prayers scheduled at Dodan Barracks in Lagos. In his Sallah message, the President urged Nigerian Muslims to carry forward the virtues of Ramadan, piety, selflessness, perseverance, kindness, empathy, and compassion, beyond the holy month, especially amid national challenges.
“We have a lot to draw from the noble lessons of Ramadan, especially at a time like this,” he said, calling for continued unity and compassion ac
