NIGERIA: Police Release Rolex Dee After Transfer From Lagos To Ibadan
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Nigeria Police Force has released popular content creator, Rolex Dee, following sustained interventions that reached the highest levels of the police hierarchy.
Rolex Dee was arrested in Lagos and transported to Ibadan, Oyo State, in connection with a civil dispute involving musician Tai Currency.
His detention and interstate transfer sparked concerns over the alleged misuse of police machinery for what many described as a purely civil matter.
Reacting to the development, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, welcomed the release but criticised the police action as part of a troubling pattern of using law enforcement agencies to intimidate and harass citizens.
Sowore stated that such practices, often justified under repressive laws and tactics, are inappropriate, unlawful, and unacceptable in a society that claims to uphold justice and the rule of law.
He noted that sustained and spirited efforts were required to escalate the matter before the police eventually released Rolex Dee.
The case has once again raised questions about the increasing tendency of individuals to drag civil disagreements into police stations, leading to arbitrary arrests and transfers that many view as clear
abuse of power.
